About Johanna
Johanna DeMaine (Cert Teach, B.Ed, B.A, Grad Dip Vis Arts, MFA, Churchill Fellow 2001) is one of Australia's foremost ceramic artists whose professional ceramic practice has spanned over 30 years in Australia.
Background
On returning from overseas travel and studies in Art and Design in UK, she established a workshop in Central Queensland in 1976, which was relocated to the Sunshine Coast in 1981 with the help of a Craft Board grant. Subsequently while operating her studio, she completed on a part time basis a Grad Dip Vis Arts, MFA and her Bachelor Education. Recently she completed Computer based Art and Design studies to augment her visual skills.
Throughout this time she has explored the concept of the vessel with a fine sense of proportion whilst her style has progressed from incised mark-making in salt glaze and celadon, to the present lustre work exploiting the pictorial imagery based on the Glasshouse Mountains where she lives.
